Everyone knows the Ryder Cup, but did you know women's golf has its own version of that rivalry?

 

When people think of team golf, the men's Ryder Cup usually comes to mind first. But there is a separate event where the United States and Europe battle it out on the LPGA side, and that is the Solheim Cup.

 

Unlike the individual stroke-play events that make up most of the tour calendar, this competition is decided purely on team results, which gives it a completely different atmosphere on and off the course. Let's take a closer look at how it started and how it is played today.

 

Origins

 

The Solheim Cup is named after Karsten Solheim, the Norwegian-American founder of the golf club manufacturer PING. He is widely credited as the driving force behind the creation of the event.

 

The inaugural Cup was held in 1990 at Lake Nona Golf and Country Club in Florida. Team USA, captained by Kathy Whitworth, cruised to an 11.5 to 4.5 victory to become the first champions.

 

The event's schedule has shifted over time. It was originally held in even-numbered years alongside the Ryder Cup, but after the 2001 Ryder Cup was postponed a year due to the September 11 attacks, the Solheim Cup moved to odd-numbered years starting in 2003. A further reshuffle tied to the COVID-19 pandemic brought it back to even-numbered years beginning in 2024.

 

The trophy itself is worth a mention too. It is a cut-glass Waterford Crystal piece designed in 1990 by Billy Briggs, one of Waterford's top designers, and weighs roughly 20 pounds. Its elegant look has made it an iconic symbol of the event.

 

Key Facts and Records

 

The competition is played over three days in a match play format. Since 2002, the standard structure has been four foursomes and four four-ball matches on each of the first two days, followed by twelve singles matches on the final day, for a total of 28 points up for grabs.

 

Through the 2024 edition, the United States leads the all-time series 11 wins to 7, with one tie. That tie came in 2023 in Spain, when the two teams finished level at 14 points each. Under the rules, a tied match means the defending champion retains the Cup, so Europe kept the trophy that year.

 

On the individual side, Europe's Laura Davies stands out. She played in a remarkable 12 Solheim Cups between 1990 and 2011 and holds the record for most career points with 25. On the American side, Juli Inkster holds the record for most singles wins, going 6-1-2 across her career in singles play.

 

The most recent edition was held in Virginia in 2024, where Team USA won 15.5 to 12.5 to reclaim the Cup. The matchup between American captain Stacy Lewis and European captain Suzann Pettersen drew plenty of attention from golf fans around the world.

The next edition in 2026 will be held at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands. It will be the first time the Netherlands has hosted a major team event like the Solheim Cup or Ryder Cup, so expectations are running high among European golf fans.

 

The following edition in 2028 is set for Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky, USA. Valhalla has hosted the men's PGA Championship four times and also staged the 2008 Ryder Cup, making it one of the few courses to host both a men's and women's team competition.

 

Team selection is another interesting aspect. The US team is chosen through a points system based on LPGA Tour results, while the European team combines top finishers on the Ladies European Tour with players ranked highly in the Women's World Golf Rankings. Each captain also gets a set number of captain's picks, which keeps the roster discussion lively right up until the teams are announced.

 

The Solheim Cup may still be less widely known than the Ryder Cup, but interest has grown quickly as women's golf continues to rise in popularity. Close matches and dramatic finishes have made it a must-watch event for serious golf fans.
