Hello everyone.
Today's post is about the Masters Tournament, one of men's golf's four major championships.
Why does the Masters feel so much more special than the other three majors?
Every April, golf fans around the world turn their attention to Augusta, Georgia. Unlike the other majors, which move to a different course every year, the Masters is always played at the same venue, Augusta National Golf Club. That gives it the feel of an annual pilgrimage fans return to every spring, rather than just another stop on the calendar.
As someone who develops charging systems for electrified equipment and squeezes in golf whenever I can, the Masters is the one major I make sure to watch every year without fail. Today I want to walk through how the tournament got started and the records that have piled up since.

Origins of the Masters
The tournament's roots trace back to the early 1930s. Legendary amateur golfer Bobby Jones teamed up with investment banker Clifford Roberts to build Augusta National Golf Club, with the course itself designed by Jones together with architect Alister MacKenzie.
The club opened in 1932, and the first tournament followed in March 1934. It wasn't originally called "the Masters" — it was officially known as the Augusta National Invitation Tournament. Roberts had wanted to call it the Masters from the very beginning, but Jones reportedly thought the name sounded too immodest.
Roberts eventually got his way, and the event was officially renamed the Masters Tournament in 1939, a name it has carried ever since. Horton Smith won that very first 1934 edition.
The following year, 1935, produced one of the most legendary moments in golf history. Gene Sarazen holed his second shot on the par-5 15th hole for a double eagle, a moment later nicknamed "the shot heard round the world" that's credited with turning the Masters into a national sensation.

Key Facts and Legends
Jack Nicklaus holds the record for most Masters titles, with six wins in 1963, 1965, 1966, 1972, 1975, and 1986. His final victory in 1986, at age 46, is still remembered as one of the greatest performances in golf history.
Tiger Woods sits second on the all-time list with five titles, won in 1997, 2001, 2002, 2005, and 2019. His 1997 win is especially famous for a record 12-stroke margin of victory, the largest in tournament history.
From the 1960s through the late 1970s, the so-called "Big Three" of Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, and Jack Nicklaus dominated the event, combining for 11 Masters titles between 1960 and 1978 alone.
Korean golfers have made their own mark on the tournament too. K.J. Choi tied for third in 2004, becoming the first Korean golfer to crack the Masters' top three, and Sungjae Im later surpassed that with a runner-up finish in 2020, still the best Masters result by a Korean player.

Good to Know
The tournament's most iconic symbol is, without question, the Green Jacket. Originally worn simply to identify Augusta National members around the clubhouse, it became the tournament's championship prize so the winner could be easily recognized each year.
The course itself has its own legends, and none is more famous than "Amen Corner," the stretch covering holes 11, 12, and 13. Tight fairways and water hazards make it a frequent turning point in the tournament, and it's produced more than its share of dramatic swings over the decades.
The Masters is also known for having one of the strictest invitation fields in golf. Only players who meet specific criteria, such as top world rankings, past major championship wins, or reigning amateur titles, earn a spot in the field, so simply qualifying is considered a milestone in itself.
The event has also grown substantially over the decades, and recent reports put the total prize purse well into the tens of millions of dollars. Exact figures vary from year to year depending on official tournament announcements, so treat any specific number here as a rough guide rather than a fixed fact.
