Golf :: Why Is the U.S. So Dominant at the Presidents Cup?

Today's post is about one of golf's biggest international team events: the Presidents Cup.

 

You've probably heard of the Ryder Cup, but what exactly makes the Presidents Cup different?

 

In a previous post we covered the Ryder Cup, the classic US vs Europe rivalry. But golf actually has a close cousin to that event: the Presidents Cup.

The Presidents Cup began in 1994. It pits a US Team against an International Team made up of top players from every part of the world except Europe.

If the Ryder Cup is US vs Europe, think of the Presidents Cup as US vs the rest of the (non-European) golfing world. Like the Ryder Cup, it's held every two years and the players compete for pride and charity rather than prize money.

 

 

Looking at the timeline above, a few moments really stand out in Presidents Cup history.

At the 1998 event in Melbourne, Australia, the International Team beat the US by a commanding 20.5 to 11.5 margin. It remains the only time in the event's history that the International Team has won outright.

The 2003 edition in South Africa was even more dramatic. Regulation play ended in a 17-17 tie, sending Tiger Woods and Ernie Els into a sudden-death playoff. After three extra holes with no winner, officials called it and the Cup was shared, the only tie in the event's history.

In 2019, the Presidents Cup was held in South Korea at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea in Songdo, marking the first time the event was played in Asia.

 

So how exactly do the Presidents Cup and the Ryder Cup compare? Here's a side-by-side breakdown.

 

 

Here's a natural question: if the formats are so similar, why is the US so dominant specifically at the Presidents Cup?

The most common explanation is team chemistry. Europe's Ryder Cup squad has built decades of continuity and camaraderie through that single rivalry, while the International Team is assembled fresh every two years from players of many different nations, leaving less time to build the same bond.

That gap has only widened recently. At the 2024 event at Royal Montreal, the US secured its 10th consecutive Presidents Cup victory.
