Today's post is about golf penalty area rules (formerly known as water hazards).

 

Do you know exactly where you're supposed to play from after your ball lands in a pond?

 

This might be one of the most confusing moments during a round. The term "water hazard" used to be standard, but since the 2019 Rules of Golf modernization, it's been folded into the broader concept of a "Penalty Area."

 

Penalty areas are marked either yellow or red depending on the stakes or lines used, and the color determines how many relief options you actually have. Let's break down the difference.

 

Here's a quick comparison of the two types first.

 

 

Landing in a penalty area doesn't automatically mean a penalty stroke. If you can find the ball and it's playable, you're allowed to play it as it lies, penalty-free. But taking relief is usually the more practical choice, so it helps to know your options.

 

In a yellow penalty area, you get one penalty stroke and a choice between two options. The first is stroke-and-distance: replay from where you made your previous stroke. The second is back-on-the-line relief: drop outside the penalty area anywhere along the line running through the hole and the point where your ball last crossed into the area.

 

In a red penalty area, you get those same two options plus a third: lateral relief. This lets you drop within two club-lengths of the point where the ball last crossed the edge of the penalty area (no closer to the hole). In practice, lateral relief is the option most golfers end up using.

A couple of practical points worth remembering: relief rules only apply when it's known or virtually certain the ball is in the penalty area — if it's just a guess, the lost ball rule may apply instead. Also, when you drop, you must do it from knee height and the ball has to land within the defined relief area to count.
