Hello everyone.

Today's post is about the history of Callaway, one of golf's most recognizable club brands.

Do you know why Callaway's most famous driver was named "Big Bertha"?

If you've played golf for any length of time, you've almost certainly come across a Callaway club. But did you know the company wasn't originally a golf business at all — it started with a man who had built his career in textiles and wine?

Let's walk through how Callaway Golf went from a small club maker to the world's largest golf club manufacturer.

The story begins in 1982. Ely Callaway, who had already built successful careers in textiles (as president of Burlington Industries) and winemaking, bought a 50% stake in a struggling small club maker called Hickory Sticks USA, which was running low on cash at the time.

The following year, in 1983, he became the company's president and moved its headquarters to Carlsbad, California. According to company lore, he could often be found selling clubs straight out of the trunk of his Cadillac in those early days.

The company wasn't officially renamed "Callaway Golf Company" until 1988. In between, in 1986, Callaway hired Richard Helmstetter — previously a designer of billiard cues — as chief club designer. Under his direction, the team developed the original Big Bertha, a steel driver with a then-massive 190cc head.

That driver is the Big Bertha. The name is said to have been borrowed from a giant German howitzer used in World War I. Officially launched in 1991, the Big Bertha concentrated weight around the perimeter of the clubhead to enlarge the sweet spot — a radical departure from the persimmon (wood) drivers that had dominated the game until then, and it quickly became a massive hit with amateur golfers.

Callaway went public on the New York Stock Exchange in February 1992, with a market capitalization of around $250 million. Riding the Big Bertha's popularity, the driver's head size grew to 290cc by 1997, the same year Callaway acquired the putter brand Odyssey Sports. By that point, the company's market cap is said to have surpassed $3 billion.

Ely Callaway stepped down as CEO in 1996, returned to the role in 1998, and remained deeply involved with the company almost until the end — he passed away from pancreatic cancer in July 2001. Callaway Golf continued to grow afterward, acquiring brands like Top-Flite and Ben Hogan, and today it stands as the world's largest manufacturer of golf clubs.

Final Thoughts

Callaway Golf began in 1982 when a textile-and-wine entrepreneur named Ely Callaway bought into a small club maker, and by 1991 a single product — the Big Bertha driver — had reshaped the entire golf club industry. Knowing the story behind the driver in your bag might just make your next round feel a little different.
