Hi everyone.

Today's post is about Tesla, the brand that basically became synonymous with electric vehicles.

Ever wonder how a company that was just a small startup twenty years ago turned into today's Tesla? Let's walk through the story from founding to now.

Tesla was incorporated in July 2003 by two engineers, Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, in California. The founding is often linked to GM recalling and crushing its EV1 electric cars around that time, which reportedly pushed them to prove that high performance and eco-friendliness didn't have to be a trade-off.

In 2004, Elon Musk invested $6.5 million and joined as chairman of the board. Then in 2008, the first production car, the Roadster, rolled off the line — an early sports car that put Tesla on the map.

2012 was the real turning point. Why does 2012 matter so much? That's when the Model S sedan launched alongside the Supercharger network. What started as 6 stations in California has since grown into thousands of locations worldwide.

In 2016, Gigafactory Nevada came online, giving Tesla its own battery production. Then 2017 brought the first Model 3 deliveries, marking the shift to a true mass-market car. From there, the lineup kept expanding — Model Y in 2020, and the Cybertruck in 2023.

Tesla isn't just a carmaker — it's also a charging infrastructure company. Have you ever thought about how fast the Supercharger network actually grew? What started as 6 stations in 2012 has expanded steadily, and it's now moving toward opening up to EVs from other brands, not just Tesla's own fleet. Working in charging systems myself, I think Tesla's story is a good example of how a charging network strategy can matter just as much as the vehicles themselves when it comes to brand competitiveness.

Final Thoughts

Tesla went from a small 2003 startup to a company with a full lineup — Roadster, Model S, Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck — while also building out the Supercharger network as its own charging infrastructure, setting a benchmark for the EV industry along the way. It'll be worth watching how much further that charging network opens up to other brands, and how quickly the rest of the industry can catch up.
