Standard strollers are built to last from the newborn stage well into toddlerhood. They tend to have sturdy frames and a smooth ride, though that also makes them heavier.
Travel systems pair with an infant car seat, so you can move your baby from the car to the stroller without waking them up. This is especially convenient for families who drive frequently.
Lightweight or umbrella strollers are easy to fold and carry, which makes them popular for travel or quick errands. That said, they usually offer less cushioning and durability than standard models.
Jogging strollers have large wheels that handle outdoor terrain well, but their bulkier frame can be inconvenient indoors or on public transit.
Double or twin strollers let you carry two children at once, but their wider frame means it's worth checking doorway and elevator widths in advance.
Safety Certifications to Check
Because a stroller carries your baby directly, safety certification is one of the most important things to verify before buying.
In Korea, strollers sold domestically must carry KC certification, which is reportedly based on the EU's R44 standard.
In Europe, both R44 and the newer R129 (i-Size) standard are currently in use, covering everything from materials and structural safety to ride performance and braking.
In the United States, strollers must meet ASTM F833 and the CPSC's federal safety standard (16 CFR Part 1227), and many parents also look for the voluntary JPMA certification as an added quality signal.
Before you buy, it's worth checking the product page or label for a valid certification mark rather than assuming every stroller on the market meets these standards.
Tips for Choosing the Right One for Your Family
Once you've confirmed the type and certification, the next step is matching the stroller to your family's actual routine.
If you drive often, a travel system may serve you well. If you rely more on public transit or walking, a lightweight model is worth prioritizing.
Testing the brakes and the one-handed fold-and-open mechanism in person at a store can tell you more than any spec sheet ever will.
Details like basket capacity, UV protection on the canopy, and the range of seat recline can matter more than expected once you're using the stroller every day.
If you're considering a secondhand stroller, check carefully for frame cracks or worn brakes, and confirm the model hasn't been subject to a recall.
