Baseball :: How Did the World Baseball Classic Become the World Cup of Baseball? A History of the International Tournament

Today I'm writing about the history of the World Baseball Classic, the international tournament often called the "World Cup of baseball."

 

Did you know baseball actually has its own version of the soccer World Cup?

 

Baseball is hugely popular in certain regions like the United States, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and the Dominican Republic, but it has never been as globally uniform in popularity as soccer. That's part of why it has had a rocky relationship with the Olympics, being dropped and later reinstated as an Olympic sport.

 

Against that backdrop, the WBC was created to raise baseball's international profile and bring together the best players from every country in one tournament. It's notable that the event was launched jointly by Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association.

 

 

Origins of the Tournament

 

The WBC was officially announced in May 2005, and the first edition was held in March 2006.

 

Before that, national-team baseball was mostly limited to the Olympics or amateur competitions. The WBC was different because it allowed each country's top professional players, including MLB stars, to represent their nation.

 

In the early years, there was some skepticism about whether MLB players should risk injury playing for their national teams during spring training season. Over time, though, the tournament earned both popularity and prestige.

 

The word "Classic" in the tournament's name was meant to evoke a prestigious, must-watch event rather than something old-fashioned, reflecting an intent to give the sport's international competition a sense of tradition and stature.

 

 

Key Facts: Editions and Champions

 

Japan won both the 1st edition (2006) and the 2nd edition (2009), establishing itself as the tournament's early powerhouse.

 

For the 3rd edition in 2013, the field expanded from 16 to 28 participating nations, with regional qualifiers determining who advanced to the final round. That year, the Dominican Republic became champion without losing a single game, a record that still stands as the only undefeated run in WBC history.

 

The United States claimed its first title at the 4th edition in 2017. Then in 2023, Japan won its third championship, capped by a dramatic final strikeout from Shohei Ohtani to seal the win over Team USA.

 

Most recently, Venezuela won its first-ever WBC title at the 2026 tournament, becoming just the second Latin American nation after the Dominican Republic to claim the championship.

 

That brings the all-time champions list to: Japan (3 titles), the Dominican Republic (1), the United States (1), and Venezuela (1) — with Japan still holding the record for most championships.

 

 

Good to Know: South Korea and the WBC

 

South Korea's national team made a surprise run to the semifinals at the inaugural 2006 tournament, then reached the final and finished as runner-up in 2009 — the high point of the program's WBC history.

 

After that peak, though, Korea was eliminated in the first round three tournaments in a row, in 2013, 2017, and 2023. Fans sometimes referred to this stretch as a dark age for the national team on the international stage.

 

That changed in 2026, when the team advanced to the second round for the first time in 17 years, a result that felt like the beginning of a turnaround.

 

Beyond determining a champion, the WBC has also become a useful barometer for tracking how a country's baseball program rises, falls, and rebuilds over time.

 

 

Final Thoughts

 

Across six editions since 2006, the WBC has given us plenty of storylines: Japan's early dominance, the Dominican Republic's undefeated run, the first American title, and now Venezuela writing its own chapter of history. With the field growing from 16 to 20 nations, the tournament has firmly established itself as baseball's answer to the World Cup.
