Origins and Name Changes
The Yankees' roots trace back to 1901. That year, the franchise was founded in Baltimore as the Orioles, a charter member of the newly formed American League. This was a different team from today's Baltimore Orioles, just one of several original American League clubs.
In 1903, the team was purchased by two businessmen, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery, and relocated to New York. Its home field, Hilltop Park, sat on one of the higher points in Manhattan, which is reportedly how the team came to be known as the 'Highlanders.'
Interestingly, because the club played in the American League, local sportswriters had already started calling the team the 'Yankees' or 'Yanks' as a nickname well before it became official. It wasn't the formal name yet, but it foreshadowed what was to come.
In 1913, after the club moved to the Polo Grounds, the 'Highlanders' name gradually fell out of use, and the team officially adopted the name 'Yankees.' It has kept that name for more than a century since.
The Birth of the Pinstripes
Another symbol instantly associated with the Yankees is their pinstriped uniform. Those thin vertical stripes are believed to have first appeared in 1912.
But they didn't stick around right away. After that brief 1912 appearance, the stripes disappeared for a few years before returning for good in navy blue in 1915, after Jacob Ruppert bought the team.
A popular myth claims the pinstripes were designed to make Babe Ruth look slimmer, but that's not true. Ruth didn't join the Yankees until 1920, well after the pinstripes had already become part of the uniform.
At the time, other clubs like the Giants and the Cubs were also wearing similar striped uniforms, so it was more of a broader fashion trend in baseball. It's a fun detail that the Yankees' now-iconic look started out as just another trend of the era.
Babe Ruth, the First Title, and 27 Championships
The single biggest turning point in Yankees history came in 1920, when the team acquired Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox. That trade is still remembered as one of the most famous transactions in MLB history.
After Ruth arrived, the Yankees grew rapidly, and in 1923 the franchise finally won its first World Series title. That same year, the team's new home, Yankee Stadium, opened its doors — a ballpark that would later earn the nickname 'The House That Ruth Built.'
From there, the Yankees kept winning across multiple eras: the late 1920s, the late 1930s, and the 1940s and 50s, among others. To date, the franchise has won 27 World Series titles, by far the most of any of MLB's 30 teams.
For comparison, the St. Louis Cardinals rank second with 11 titles, while the Athletics and Red Sox each have 9. Looking at those numbers side by side really puts the Yankees' 27 championships into perspective.
Good to Know
One quirky detail about the Yankees: neither their home nor road jerseys have ever displayed player names on the back. It's a long-standing team tradition, said to reflect a philosophy that the team comes before any individual player.
