Today's post is about the Ryder Cup, one of golf's biggest international team events.
"How did two continents end up fighting over one small trophy every two years?"
Golf isn't just about individual glory. The Ryder Cup pits the best golfers from the United States against those from Europe in one of the sport's most intense team rivalries.
The cup takes its name from Samuel Ryder, an English businessman who donated the trophy. The first official Ryder Cup was played in 1927 at Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts, USA.
The competition originally pitted the US against Great Britain. From 1973 to 1977, a combined Great Britain and Ireland team took the field. Then in 1979, eligibility expanded to include golfers from continental Europe, creating the US vs. Europe format we know today.
The Ryder Cup is held every two years, with each side fielding 12 players in match-play format. Hosting duties alternate between the US and Europe.
Looking at the all-time record, the US holds the edge. Across 45 editions, the US has won 27 times, Europe 16, with 2 ties. Interestingly, though, Europe has won 11 of the last 15 editions, showing real strength in recent years.
The most recent edition, the 2025 Ryder Cup, was held at Bethpage Black in New York. Europe won 15-13, marking its first road victory since the famous "Miracle at Medinah" in 2012, 13 years earlier.
Europe built a commanding 7-point lead over the first two days, and the US mounted a furious singles-day comeback on the final day, but ultimately came up short.
