Today's post is about one of the most talked-about future EV technologies: V2G, or Vehicle-to-Grid.

 

Could the electric car sitting in your driveway actually sell power back to the grid someday?

 

V2G stands for Vehicle-to-Grid, a technology that lets energy stored in an EV battery flow back out into the power grid. Until now, EVs have mostly been one-way consumers of electricity. With V2G, a car's surplus charge can be sold back to the grid or used to help balance electricity supply and demand.

 

Two related terms are worth knowing too: V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) and V2L (Vehicle-to-Load). V2H lets your car act like a home battery during a power outage, while V2L supplies power to external devices, handy for camping trips or job sites. All three rely on the same foundation: a bidirectional power converter and a standardized communication protocol.

 

 

Looking back at V2G's history, Japan's CHAdeMO camp is widely credited with rolling out the first commercial bidirectional charging systems in the early 2010s. The CCS ecosystem, more common in Europe and North America, caught up later: ISO 15118-20 was officially published in April 2022, giving CCS a standardized international protocol for bidirectional charging as well.

 

As of 2026, several automakers are rolling out V2G-capable models in stages. Volkswagen's ID. lineup has shipped "Bidi-Ready" since 2023, with the feature reportedly set to activate later via software update. Nissan has announced a more affordably priced V2G-capable model for 2026, while the BMW iX3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC have both announced V2G support arriving this year.

 

 

Not every EV supports V2G yet, though. Even in 2026, most new EVs still lack bidirectional charging, and full V2H/V2G functionality is reportedly limited to select models from a handful of brands. Adoption also varies by region: in China, for example, bidirectional charging protocols under the GB/T standard are still not fully standardized.

V2G is turning the EV from a simple mode of transport into a "mobile energy storage unit." Challenges remain, from battery degradation concerns to uneven standards adoption across regions, but with ISO 15118-20 now in place and more automakers rolling out compatible models, 2026 looks like a year that brings V2G a step closer to everyday life.
