Hi there.
Today's post covers one of the most debated rules in soccer: the handball foul.
Does the ball touching a hand always mean a foul? Referees' calls on this often look inconsistent from the stands, so let's break down exactly how it's judged.
First, the basic principle. Apart from the goalkeeper, no player may deliberately play the ball with their hand or arm — doing so is called for handball.
But not every touch is a foul. Referees weigh several factors together, including the position of the arm, intent, and distance from the ball.

The most important factor is arm position. If the arm is held away from the body in a way that makes the body look unnaturally bigger, it's usually called even without clear intent.
On the other hand, if the arm is close to the body and the ball deflects onto it at very short range, referees often judge there wasn't enough time to react, so no foul is called.
In short, the real question isn't whether the ball touched the hand, but whether the arm was in a natural position.

A few real scenarios make this clearer. Spreading an arm to block the ball, or controlling the ball with a hand into a shot or pass, are both clear fouls.
On the other hand, a ball glancing off the head and onto the arm without intent, or a goalkeeper using their hands inside their own penalty area, are not fouls.
Notably, if a goal is scored right after a handball, it's usually disallowed regardless of intent. Since VAR was introduced, these moments get reviewed much more closely.
