Hello everyone.
Today's post is about the factors that actually influence a child's height growth.
"Is a child's height really just decided by genetics?"
Height is known to be strongly influenced by genetics, but studies disagree on exactly how much. Some research puts the genetic contribution at 60-80 percent, while other studies suggest it's closer to 20-30 percent.
What matters is that environmental factors — nutrition, sleep, and exercise — can also make a real difference. Even within a child's genetic potential, poor environmental conditions can keep them at the lower end of that range.

So why does sleep, one of those environmental factors, matter so much? Growth hormone is secreted most actively during sleep, especially during deep, slow-wave sleep. That secretion tends to peak somewhere between 10pm and 2am.
That said, what matters more than the exact bedtime is sleep quality. Even if a child goes to bed later, getting enough deep sleep can still allow growth hormone to be released fairly normally.

Exercise is another factor that supports height growth. The growth plates in long bones are thought to respond to moderate mechanical impact by accelerating bone formation, which is why jump-heavy activities like jump rope, basketball, swimming, and high jump tend to be considered more effective than low-impact activities like walking or light jogging.
"Does a child need growth hormone injections to grow taller?"
Not every child needs special treatment, of course. But if a child's growth is noticeably slower than peers or you're genuinely concerned, it's worth checking a proper growth chart with a pediatrician or pediatric endocrinologist rather than guessing on your own.

Nutrition is another piece that shouldn't be overlooked. Rather than relying on a single supplement, the basics are a balanced diet that combines carbohydrates, protein, and fat with minerals and vitamins like calcium and vitamin D.
Summary
A child's height is shaped by genetics, but habits like sleep, exercise, and nutrition can still make a meaningful difference within that range. If you're worried about your child's growth, it's worth checking your daily habits one by one, and reaching out to a pediatrician if needed ^^
