Safety comes first. A golf club is a more dangerous tool than it looks. When a playing partner is preparing to swing, the basic rule is to stand quietly outside their swing path and out of their line of sight.

 

Course care is next. A golf course is shared turf used by countless players. Leaving your divots or bunker footprints unrepaired creates problems for the group behind you, and even for golfers the next day.

 

Pace of play matters too. Eighteen holes are scheduled to take a set amount of time, and there's almost always a group waiting behind you. Taking too long to search for a ball or stepping up to address the ball unprepared slows down the entire course.

 

Finally, golf is one of the rare sports played without a referee on hand. That makes self-regulation essential, and this tradition of self-governance is often cited as one of the things that makes golf a genuinely special sport.

Etiquette Point by Point, Situation by Situation

 

On the tee box, the basic rule is to never move or speak while a partner is preparing their tee shot. Keep your eyes away from their swing path, and be mindful of where your shadow falls so it doesn't cross their line of sight.

 

Once you hit a shot from the fairway, a divot is almost unavoidable. If a chunk of turf came loose, place it back where it belongs, and if the course provides sand-and-seed mix, fill the divot with that instead.

 

In a bunker, always rake away your footprints and swing marks after your shot. The rake is typically left at the edge of the bunker afterward, ready for the next player to use.

 

On the green, watch your footing so you don't step on a partner's putting line. Walk around the line near the hole instead of across it, and check that your shadow, cart, or golf bag isn't blocking anyone else's view.

 

Dress Code, Carts, and What Beginners Often Miss

 

Dress codes vary by course, but most require a collared shirt and proper golf shoes or approved footwear. If you're heading to a course for the first time, it's worth checking the dress code when you book your tee time.

 

Phone etiquette trips up a lot of beginners too. Set your phone to silent so a ringtone or vibration doesn't go off while another group is swinging, and if you really need to take a call, step aside until your partners have finished their shots.

 

When driving a cart, stay out of sensitive turf areas like greens, tee boxes, and the ground around water hazards. If a cart path is available, sticking to it is the best way to help protect the course.
