Today's post covers baby gear: the three essentials most newborns need right away, and what to actually look for when choosing each one.

 

"Car seat, stroller, baby carrier... where do you even start when picking these out?"

 

The list of things new parents need to prepare can feel endless. Among all of it, the car seat, stroller, and baby carrier (or hip seat) stand out because they're used from the newborn stage, so understanding the safety basics really matters.

 

Rather than recommending specific brands or products, this post focuses on the criteria worth checking for each of these three items.

 

 

1. Car Seat: What to Check

 

A car seat should carry a valid child-product safety certification for your country before anything else. In many places, children under a certain age or weight are legally required to ride in an approved car seat.

 

For newborns, the standard approach is a bucket-style 'infant' seat installed rear-facing. Rear-facing is widely recommended because it reduces stress on a baby's neck in the event of a collision.

 

A quick way to test the installation is to grip the base and try rocking it side to side. If it moves more than about an inch, it likely isn't secured tightly enough and should be reinstalled.

 

ISOFIX (or similar latch systems) isn't strictly required, but using it can reduce how far a child's head moves forward in a crash, adding an extra layer of safety. It's worth checking ISOFIX compatibility before you buy.

 

 

2. Stroller: What to Check

 

Strollers are also subject to child-product safety certification in many countries, often split into categories for newborn use versus general use once a baby can sit up. If you plan to use it from birth, make sure it's certified for newborn use specifically.

 

Safety testing typically covers finish and materials, structural integrity, and ride/durability performance — with fold-lock mechanisms and brake performance standing out as especially important checks.

 

When you're actually looking at a stroller in person, it's worth testing the frame for wobble, making sure the brakes lock firmly, and confirming the fold mechanism stays securely locked rather than popping open unexpectedly.

 

The fabric that touches your baby matters too. Look for materials that have been tested for harmful substances, colorfastness, shrinkage after washing, and skin-contact safety.

 

 

3. Baby Carrier / Hip Seat: What to Check

 

One of the most important things to look for in a carrier is whether it keeps baby's legs in an 'M-shape' position — knees higher than hips, legs spread in an M. This position is widely considered supportive of healthy hip development.

 

The back support ideally maintains baby's natural spine curve in a 'C' shape, so it's worth checking that detail as well when comparing carriers.

 

Hip-seat style carriers are generally considered safe to use once a baby can support their own head and neck, usually around 5 months. Up until around a baby's first birthday, a front-facing-in (facing the parent) position is often recommended for hip development.

 

If you're using a carrier during the newborn stage (roughly 2 weeks to 3 months), be sure to use a head support or newborn insert. When adjusting straps, avoid over-tightening in a way that could restrict baby's airway.
