Today's post is about the man widely considered the greatest footballer in history - Pele.

 

Do you know how he actually earned the nickname "King of Football"?

 

Pele, born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, was born in Brazil in 1940. He joined the storied Brazilian club Santos at just 15 years old, and made his debut for the Brazil national team the following year, in 1957.

 

At the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, a 17-year-old Pele helped lead Brazil to the title, becoming the youngest World Cup winner in history. He went on to win two more titles, in 1962 and 1970, making him the only player ever to win three World Cups.

 

Looking at his national team record alone, Pele played 92 matches for Brazil between 1957 and 1971, scoring 77 goals. Across four World Cups (1958, 1962, 1966, and 1970), he is credited with 12 goals.

 

His total career goal count is debated. Pele himself claimed 1,283 goals during his lifetime, but the officially recognized tally - combining his Santos and New York Cosmos club records with his national team goals - comes to around 757. For reference, Guinness World Records credits him with 1,279 goals including friendly matches.

 

In 1975, he joined the New York Cosmos of the NASL, helping to fuel a soccer boom in the United States, before retiring in 1977. He was named Athlete of the Century by the IOC in 1999 and co-awarded FIFA Player of the Century in 2000 alongside Diego Maradona - cementing his place as one of the greatest players the sport has ever seen.

 

Pele passed away in December 2022 at the age of 82, but the records and influence he left behind are still discussed among football fans today.
